When you see a recipe in a magazine or on the internet and think to yourself: ‘This is an absolutely brilliant idea! I must try this out immediately. Oh crap, the recipe says it has a long baking time but hey, if I turn the oven on a higher temperature, surely it won’t take as long….’. Think again!
I thought I would be able to outsmart this recipe, cut the baking time in half and still have enough time to watch at least 5 episodes of American Horror Story (latest obsession). Instead what I got was a batch of charcoal banana chips (I won’t even bother you with a photo), an additional trip to the store to buy new bananas and a lesson in following prescribed baking times.
Three hours later I also got the most delicious chewy baked banana chips…so my day was not completely ruined.
These chips are baked, not fried, and thus contain less fat and no additional sugars.
- “Two ingredients? Are you for real? That’s it?”
– “Jup, That’s it! OH, and you’ll need a little bit of olive oil (I forgot). So three ingredients really.”
Four Banana’s will make approx. 4 cups of banana chips.
Pre heat your oven to 210° Fahrenheit or 100° Celsius. My mistake was to think I could just bake the banana chips for a short amount of time at a very high temperature. As stated earlier this was a big mistake… You want to bake these chips slowly at a very low temperature, at this temperature your oven will dehydrate the bananas which will give them their crispiness.
1. Squeeze the juice from one lemon.
2. Cut the bananas into thin slices.
3. Dip the slices into the lemon juice.
4. Slightly grease your baking sheet with a little bit of olive oil (this will make sure the bananas won’t stick to the baking sheet) and line your slices onto the baking sheet.
5. Bake the banana chips for approximately 2,5 hours. The necessary baking time can variate depending on the thickness of your banana slices, so be sure to check on your chips every thirty minutes.
6. Take out your chips and let them cool completely. The chips will harden as they cool.
The whole process took some time but the result was worth the wait. And the best part? While these babys where baking in the oven, I had time to wach 3 episodes!
